Weekly Postcard: The Caney Window Glass Co. [postcards] | Dec 09, 2004 22:42 |
There were a number of glass plants in Kansas and Oklahoma during the early 1900's. Both my great-grandfather and his father worked at the glass plants for some time.
This is another photograph-turned-postcard. The subject is the Caney (Kansas) Window Glass Company plant.
My great-grandfather's 1917-18 Wage Scale booklet of the National Window Glass Workers is below. Click the thumbnails to read a bit of the booklet.
In a letter to his daughter, Paul Cottrell, told of his work in those early days:
"After the Sapulpa glass plant closed, your Grand Dad Cameron advised that one could find work at the Caney Zinc Smelter. I started as common labor but the Chemist learned I had experience in heat meters from my glass working days, so gave me the job of reading 20 heat meters hourly. Soon I was back in the Augusta Glass plant as the Night Mgr."
There were several similar plants.
The Wednesday postcard is a bit late.
