I love sunsets, especially with some well-placed clouds. I started to crop this one down, but the expanse of blue sky really makes it.

Apropos of nothing (that I know of...), Maggie made this cautionary sign.

We took a jaunt into Washington today to visit the Washington Monument. It was our first time to go up into it and the views were spectacular.

During the middle weekend of the trip, we went over to the mainland to the Schoodic Peninsula. Portions of Schoodic are also part of Acadia National Park, but get a lot less traffic due to the location. They say this is the prime spot to see really big, crashing waves during high tide and during storms.

The view here is back to the west, with Mt. Desert Island and its Cadillac Mountain in the distance. The last time we were here, we were completely socked in with fog, so a somewhat clear view was a real treat.

Here's a shot from the Alpine meadow above Sky Meadows State Park [www.dcr.virginia.gov], about 45 beautiful minutes from home, along Rt. 50. I took the kids there for a hike this afternoon. The hike was about 3-4 miles, South Ridge Trail to North Ridge Trail, and overlooking some beautiful Virginia scenery. The facilities are nice and they even have a little gift shop for the requisite sticker.

Downside? 98F. Summer, oy.
