You'll Love Lufkin: South First Street At Timberland Drive
This intersection is the split between old and new in Lufkin. At one time, First Street ran through town, end to end, albeit in a not-so-straight fashion, with most of the neighborhoods and downtown along its path. Timberland Drive is the new, with the modern-day restaurants and businesses, which seems to have drawn life away from downtown. Timberland Drive is where to find the neon, the strip malls, and gas stations galore. We spent a good portion of our high-school years, cruising up and down Timberland on Friday nights, Sonic to Lufkin Mall, and back, mostly out of trouble. "We're gonna go ridin' around," we'd say. Interesting things at this intersection: Kiwanis Park, Lufkin's ancient and original McDonald's, a radio station, and the First Christian Church, show in this postcard. Google map of the area. | |
